Who Seabourn genuinely suits

  • People who want ultra-luxury with no big ship anywhere in sight, and who care more about how a day feels than how many venues are on deck 12.

  • Anyone in the South East who wants that without flying. Seabourn runs more sailings from Dover than from Southampton, which almost nobody expects.

  • Anyone curious about expedition travel who does not want to give up a proper suite. From Belfast, Greenwich and Leith, Seabourn sails its two expedition ships to the Faroes, Iceland, Greenland and the wild Scottish isles.

When you'd be better off elsewhere

  • Anyone expecting high-octane stage productions, a late-night club scene, or anywhere for children. Seabourn is quiet after about 10pm, and if you wanted a livelier ship you will find that lifeless rather than relaxing.

  • Anyone who books on the name alone. The ocean ships and the expedition ships are different holidays, so check which one your sailing uses before anything else.

What the ships are actually like

Two kinds of ship. The ocean fleet, Seabourn Quest among them on the Dover sailings, is all-suite and ocean-view throughout, built for ports and quiet sea days. Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit are expedition ships, with a fleet of 24 Zodiacs, sea kayaks, snorkelling and an expedition team leading the landings, and they are what sails from Belfast, Greenwich and Leith. Both were built with garages for two submarines, and older reviews still mention them, but Seabourn has ended its submarine programme, so do not book expecting a dive.

Evenings have real shape to them, they just aren't loud. The Constellation Lounge runs live piano before and after dinner; the Grand Salon hosts small, cabaret-style shows, vocalists, comedy, dance, rather than a Broadway-scale production; and on the right night there's Evenings Under the Stars, a poolside dance party with a live band, or a quieter drink at the open-air Sky Bar. It's a floating boutique hotel's idea of a night out, not a floating city's.

"Quiet evenings" isn't a criticism here, it's the whole design

Quiet and nothing happens read very differently once you are aboard, and it is worth knowing which one this is. Evenings here revolve around conversation rather than volume: a pianist before and after dinner, a small cabaret show instead of a production number, late drinks under the stars with people who have been most places you are thinking of going. Nobody is trying to fill your evening for you, which is either the best thing about the ship or the thing you will miss, and there is no middle ground.
