Who Norwegian Cruise Line genuinely suits

  • People who dread formal nights and want full control of their own schedule. "Freestyle Cruising" is NCL's own term for it: no assigned dining seating and no mandatory dress code, so you eat when you want, wearing what you want.

  • Anyone who judges a holiday by its evenings. The West End-style production shows are a genuine strength, and alongside the flexible dining they are what British guests praise most.

When you'd be better off elsewhere

  • Anyone who would rather have the holiday planned for them. Popular speciality restaurants and the bigger shows need booking through NCL's app before you sail, and the good slots go early, so "freestyle" still needs a bit of homework.

  • Anyone who hates being sold to. The onboard atmosphere is American and commercial, with a steady run of offers for drinks, dining and the spa, and the sense of being charged for extras at every turn is the most common complaint from British guests.

What the ships are actually like

Large, entertainment-heavy ships built around choice: several dining venues instead of one main restaurant, and production shows pitched at a West End standard rather than a single nightly cabaret.

From Southampton you will be on Norwegian Getaway, Jewel or Star, so ask which before you compare prices. Getaway is a big, modern Breakaway-class ship. Jewel and Star are older and have been refurbished, so the public rooms look fresh, but anyone who has sailed NCL's newest ships will notice what is missing: the big outdoor promenades such as the Prima class's Ocean Boulevard, fewer speciality restaurants, and a more traditional layout built around a central atrium.

"Free at Sea" is not free, and the service charges are where it shows

NCL's Free at Sea offer adds perks such as a drinks package and speciality dining to your booking, and it is sold as an affordable upgrade. The part British guests are caught out by is the service charge. It is calculated on the full retail value of those packages, not on what you paid for them. On top of that, a daily service charge is added to your onboard account automatically for every guest.

None of that is hidden, and the packages can still be good value, but price the whole thing before you compare it with a line whose fare already includes drinks and gratuities. Once you do, the gap is usually smaller than the headline suggests.

The freedom is real, with two small catches. NCL still holds one or two optional formal nights on longer sailings, so dressing up is available, just never required. And without booking ahead on the app, waiting for a table at the popular restaurants at peak times is a normal part of the week.
