Who Disney Cruise Line genuinely suits

Families where the children are the point of the holiday rather than something to be occupied while the adults relax. Nobody else builds a ship around that assumption, and it shows in the parts of the day other lines treat as dead time.
Anyone who has watched a family member light up at something and wanted a week of it. That is a real reason to book a holiday, and it is worth saying out loud rather than pretending the itinerary is doing the work.

When you'd be better off elsewhere

Anyone hoping this is a mass-market fare. It is not, and the gap is wide: a seven-night Norwegian fjords sailing from Southampton starts at £2,943 per person in an inside cabin, which is luxury-tier money on a large family ship.
Anyone who wants the ship to disappear into the background. The theming is not a layer you can opt out of once you are aboard, and if it is not for you, a fortnight of it is a long time.

What the ships are actually like

Large, modern and unmistakable. Disney Wish is the ship Britain sees: it runs a full Southampton season through summer 2027, sailing Norwegian fjords, Spain, Belgium and the British Isles, before returning to its usual Port Canaveral programme.

The fleet's centre of gravity is a long way from here. Of 650 sailings worldwide, 411 are Caribbean and 107 are Asia, so what reaches Southampton is a deliberate seasonal visit rather than a permanent British operation.

The Southampton season is real, and it is short

Most people assume Disney means flying to Florida, and for most of the year they are right. But there is a genuine UK programme, and it is easy to miss: fourteen sailings from Southampton, concentrated into summer, on itineraries that have nothing to do with the Caribbean. A seven-night Norwegian fjords round trip calling at Kristiansand, Olden, Ålesund and Haugesund is a real Disney sailing you can drive to.

The catch is the arithmetic, and it is worth doing before you fall for the idea. That fjords sailing starts around £2,943 per person inside, £4,456 for a balcony. A comparable week on a mass-market ship from the same port is a fraction of it. You are not paying for a better itinerary, because the fjords are the fjords whoever takes you. You are paying for what happens on board.

Which makes the decision unusually clean. If the on-board experience is the holiday for your family, the price is the price and the fjords are a bonus. If you mainly wanted to see Norway and the ship is transport, almost anything else from Southampton will do it for less.
