Anyone booked onto MS Europa expecting an English-first holiday. Europa has run an overwhelmingly German-speaking service for decades, and while the whole fleet moved to a bilingual policy from January 2026, German-speaking guests still make up the clear majority on board in practice.

What the ships are actually like

A five-ship fleet split into two real characters: Europa 2 and the Hanseatic trio are internationally minded and bilingual by design, while the older MS Europa remains German in feel even under the new bilingual policy. Precise, formal and understated across the board, rather than loud or showy.

Which ship matters more here than which line

Two very different holidays sail under one name, and the difference is language.

MS Europa has run almost entirely in German for decades. Hapag-Lloyd moved the whole fleet to a bilingual policy in January 2026, which is a real change, but a policy does not rewrite who is actually in the dining room. German speakers are still the clear majority aboard Europa, and if you do not speak it you will spend the fortnight slightly outside the conversation.

Europa 2 and the three Hanseatic expedition ships are a genuinely different proposition, and have been for years: bilingual by design, English lectures, an international mix of guests. Choose one of those four and you get the precision and the understated ultra-luxury the brand is known for, with none of the language friction. Choose Europa without knowing this and the ship will be flawless while the week is quietly lonely.
