Every sailing, every day, is polar. Nothing else on the schedule.
Guests who want a polar specialist and nothing else. Quark's entire programme runs only in the Arctic and Antarctic, Svalbard, Greenland, the Canadian High Arctic and Iceland in the north, the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and the Falklands in the south, with no tropical or shoulder-season sailings to dilute the focus.
Anyone who wants ultra-luxury polish alongside the adventure. Quark's own newbuild, Ultramarine, carries two twin-engine helicopters across two helidecks for heli-hiking and flightseeing, genuinely rare hardware, but the ship is built around maximum time on the ice rather than spa and dining as the headline.
Purpose-built polar hardware led by Ultramarine, Quark's first newbuild, delivered 2021, with two Airbus H145 helicopters aboard. Worth knowing: those helicopters don't fly on Svalbard sailings at all, a regulatory restriction there, so the aircraft are an Antarctic and Canadian Arctic feature rather than a fleet-wide guarantee.
There are several serious expedition operators, and most of them mix polar sailings in among fjords, the Galapagos, or a luxury layer that happens to visit cold places. Quark does not. Every ship, every season, the entire calendar, is Arctic or Antarctic. Nothing is being repurposed between seasons and no crew is switching modes in April.
That shows up in the hardware. Ultramarine was purpose-built for this in 2021 and carries two twin-engine helicopters across two helidecks, for heli-hiking and flightseeing that almost nothing else at sea can offer.
One thing to check by itinerary rather than by ship: those helicopters do not fly on Svalbard sailings at all. It is a local regulatory restriction rather than an operational choice, so if flying is the reason you are booking, make sure it is not a Svalbard departure.
