Who Ambassador Cruise Line genuinely suits

Anyone who wants a British, no-fly holiday leaving from a port they can actually drive to. Tilbury, Newcastle, Belfast, Liverpool, Bristol and Portsmouth all appear in the programme, so for much of the country this is the shortest journey to a ship you will find anywhere on this site.

When you'd be better off elsewhere

Anyone travelling with children, or expecting new-build ships and a wide choice of specialty dining. Ambassador carries guests aged 18 and over only, an enforced booking rule rather than a soft demographic lean, and the fleet is straightforwardly traditional rather than lavish.

What the ships are actually like

Three secondhand ships, each with a previous life: Ambience (built 1991, once Regal Princess, then Pacific Dawn), Ambition (built 1999, once AIDAmira and Costa neoRiviera) and Renaissance (built in the early 1990s, once Holland America Line's Maasdam), the newest addition to the fleet. Standard decor and entertainment rather than headline venues, and a genuinely warm, British atmosphere on board.

The value story is convenience, not necessarily price

Ambassador is often described as the cheaper Fred. Olsen, and the comparison does not survive checking real fares. Per night, Ambassador frequently lands level with Fred. Olsen or above it, and what reads as a discount is usually a different set of inclusions.

The genuine advantage is not price, it is the drive. No other line here sails a higher share of its fleet from Britain, and it goes from ports the others do not always reach. If you live in the North East, the North West or Northern Ireland, that can be the difference between a two-hour drive and a day of travel before the holiday starts, and it is worth more than a few pounds a night.

Be clear-eyed about the ships in return. All three are pre-owned, built for other owners thirty-odd years ago, and finished in a straightforward traditional style rather than a lavish one. Book knowing that and people tend to come home happy. Book expecting glossy and modern and the ships will be the thing you remember, for the wrong reason.
