Cruises from Dover

The one UK port where the British lines do not sail. Dover is where American and luxury operators base a European season, and that changes what you can book here far more than the map suggests.

Who sailing from Dover suits

  • Anyone in Kent, Sussex or south-east London. It is the closest full-size cruise port to a large part of the South East, and for a good many people a shorter run than Southampton by some margin.

  • Anyone who wants American-style cruising without flying to America for it. Holland America and Carnival both base a ship here for the European season, and that is a genuinely different product from the British lines: different service culture, different food, a different rhythm to the day.

  • Anyone over fifty looking at Saga. Dover is one of only two ports Saga sails from, and their fares include door-to-door travel from your home.

  • Anyone who wants ultra-luxury from a UK port without a flight. Seabourn keeps two ships here across the season, which is an unusual amount of ultra-luxury tonnage for a British port and easily missed.

When you'd be better off elsewhere

  • Anyone wanting a short break, and this is the clearest advice on the page. The shortest sailing from Dover is eight nights and most are ten to fourteen. There is no weekend cruise here at all. Tilbury is where the two- to five-night sailings live.

  • Anyone expecting P&O, Cunard, Princess or Fred. Olsen. None of them board at Dover. If you have a British line in mind you want Southampton, and it is not a marginal difference.

  • Families with younger children. Carnival aside, the operators here skew adult, over-fifty or luxury. Southampton has far more that is built around children.

The British lines do not sail from Dover

Almost everyone assumes a Kent cruise port means British ships. It does not, and it is the most useful thing to know before you start looking.

The biggest operator at Dover is Holland America, an American line. Carnival, also American, bases a ship here for the season. Between them they are a little over half the departures. The British presence is Saga, sailing for the over-fifties, and Seabourn at the ultra-luxury end. P&O, Cunard, Princess and Fred. Olsen do not board here at all.

That is not a criticism of Dover, it is a different market. It means the ships are smaller than the Southampton giants, the crowd is more international, and the on-board style is not the British-resort feel a lot of first-time UK cruisers picture.

The second thing follows from the first: nobody at Dover runs short breaks. The programme is built around ten- to fourteen-night itineraries to Norway, the Baltic, Iberia and the Canaries, with a pair of twenty-eight-night voyages on top. If you were hoping for a long weekend at sea, this is the wrong port and Tilbury is the right one.

What actually sails from Dover

  • Norway, the fjords and the Arctic: the backbone of the Dover summer, typically ten nights and up

  • The Baltic and Northern Europe: twelve to fourteen nights, and the reason the larger ships are here at all

  • Iberia, Portugal and the Canary Islands: fourteen nights southbound, on Holland America and Carnival

  • The Channel and northern France: Le Havre, Cherbourg and the Channel Islands, usually inside a longer voyage rather than on their own

  • Grand voyages: a pair of twenty-eight-night sailings combining the British Isles, the Canaries and the Arctic Circle

Getting there

By road

The M20 and A2 both run into Dover and the cruise terminals are signposted from the edge of town. Parking is arranged through the cruise line when you book rather than paid on the day.

By rail

Dover Priory is the town's station, with high-speed services from London St Pancras as well as slower trains from Victoria and Charing Cross. The station is not at the terminal, so plan for a taxi at the end.

By air

There is little reason to fly, which is rather the point of sailing from here. If someone is joining you from abroad, Gatwick is the usual choice and Heathrow works with a longer transfer.
