Who Holland America Line genuinely suits

Guests who want a mid-sized, classic ship with a genuine live-music culture: recent years have brought more live bands and regional soloists on board, a deliberate push independent cruise press has covered as a real shift, not just marketing.

When you'd be better off elsewhere

Anyone chasing Carnival-style high energy. Holland America shares a parent company and a Dover berth with Carnival, but is the quieter, more traditional holiday of the two, not a lesser version of the same one.
Anyone comparing the fare like for like with a British line. The ship runs in US dollars, a daily service charge per guest is added automatically, and drinks, speciality dining and the spa carry their own service charge on top. Budget for it, prepay it if you prefer, and let your card provider rather than the ship convert the bill to pounds.

What the ships are actually like

Mid-sized ships that fit into smaller ports than the largest mainstream lines manage, with longer, more destination-focused itineraries. B.B. King's Blues Club is a real, current venue, though only on the Signature and Pinnacle-class ships; the Vista-class ships carry the Rolling Stone Lounge instead, so check which one yours has. From Dover it is the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Statendam. Billboard Onboard's dueling pianos are current fleet-wide.

Dismissing it as "an old person's ship" misses what it actually does well

The thing that actually sets Holland America apart is not the average age on board, it is the music. There is more live playing here, in more rooms, across more nights, than on almost anything else at this size, and it is a deliberate investment rather than a hangover from an older era. Add mid-sized hulls that fit into ports the giants cannot reach, and longer itineraries that stay put once they arrive, and you have a specific kind of cruising rather than a slower version of someone else's.

One correction worth carrying, because the reputation outlived the fact: the Lincoln Center Stage classical partnership ended in 2023, and the replacement was scrapped as well. If you remember it fondly and were counting on it, it is no longer there.
