When you'd be better off elsewhere

Anyone booking out of Dover because the name sounds familiar and expecting a quiet, traditional sailing. If you arrive wanting calm, the energy will floor you.
Anyone comparing the fare like for like with a British line. The ship runs in US dollars, a daily service charge is added for every guest aged two and over, and drinks and speciality dining carry their own service charge. Budget for it before you compare, and let your card provider rather than the ship convert the bill to pounds.

What the ships are actually like

Carnival and Holland America share the same parent company, Carnival Corporation, and the same UK homeport, but the onboard DNA is close to opposite. Carnival is loud, fun-focused and high-octane; Holland America is quieter, mid-sized and built around live music and destination time. Never assume the brand names speak for themselves here.

Carnival and Holland America sail from the same Dover berth, under the same parent company, and could hardly be less alike. Carnival is loud, fun-first and American in its bones: a party deck, a soundtrack, and something happening in every direction from mid-morning. Holland America, at the next bollard, is mid-sized, unhurried and built around live music and long days in port.

Book by convenience, or by a name that sounds vaguely familiar, and there is a real chance of ending up on the wrong one of the two. Neither is the lesser holiday. They are simply for different weeks of your life, and Dover is the one place in Britain where you can walk past one to reach the other.
