Who Swan Hellenic genuinely suits

Anyone who wants the expedition without the endurance test. The programme is genuinely polar at one end, the Antarctic Peninsula and the Arctic, but it also runs Asia, Africa, South America and a run of Atlantic coastal voyages, so you can buy into the style without committing to ice.
People who travel to learn something. The enrichment is the product here rather than a wet-weather activity, and it is the thread that runs back to what the original Swan Hellenic was known for.
Anyone who finds a 3,000-guest ship unthinkable. SH Diana carries 192 guests with 127 crew, roughly two crew for every three guests, so nobody is ever far from someone who can help.

When you'd be better off elsewhere

Anyone hoping to sail from Britain. One departure of 185 leaves from a UK port, a single Dover sailing, so in practice this is a fly-cruise line despite the name.
Families with children. There is no youth provision on ships of this size and the programme is built around lectures and landings.
Anyone who wants the old Swan Hellenic. The name is the same and the idea behind it survives, but this is a different company operating different ships. The original Minerva is not the new SH Minerva, and going in expecting her is the one way to be disappointed by something that is actually rather good.

What the ships are actually like

Three ships, all recent: SH Minerva, SH Vega and SH Diana. SH Diana was launched in 2023 and is the largest at 192 guests across 96 cabins and nine decks, which is small enough to reach places a full-size ship cannot and big enough to be comfortable crossing open water.

Ice-strengthened hulls built for the polar programme, which is what lets the same ship run the Antarctic Peninsula in the southern season and Iberia or the Mediterranean in the northern one.

Accessibility is limited by size and worth checking early: SH Diana has two wheelchair-accessible cabins out of 96.

The name is older than the company using it

Swan Hellenic is one of the most recognised names in British cruising, and a lot of people booking it today are booking a memory. It is worth being straight about what continues and what does not.

The original was a British cultural-cruising operator, the sort that sailed with academics aboard, and it ceased trading in 2017. In July 2020 an international consortium led by the cruise veteran Andrea Zito bought the Swan Hellenic brand and its customer database from G Adventures. The ships now sailing under the name are new builds: SH Minerva in 2021, SH Vega in 2022, and the slightly larger SH Diana in 2023, all designed for polar and remote regions.

So what carries over is the name, the database and the idea: small ships, serious enrichment, itineraries chosen for what is ashore. What does not carry over is the company, the crew or the vessels. If you sailed on the original Minerva and want that again, this is not that, and no amount of shared branding makes it so.

None of which is an argument against booking it. The current product is a well-regarded small-ship expedition line with an unusually good crew ratio and a genuinely wide-ranging programme. It is simply a relaunch rather than a continuation, and a brochure trading on a heritage name is not where you will read that.
