Ponant

Authentically French, and that's the whole pitch, not a footnote.

Who Ponant genuinely suits

  • Culturally curious travellers who want a genuinely French holiday afloat, not just a luxury cruise that happens to fly a French flag. Announcements and briefings run in French first, English second; the cuisine is developed with Alain Ducasse's own consultancy, Ducasse Conseil, fleet-wide including the flagship Commandant Charcot; and Veuve Clicquot is the house champagne, poured at the captain's welcome reception.

When you'd be better off elsewhere

  • Anyone who wants a familiar, English-first, Anglo-American ship. Ponant does not offer that, by design, and the pace and the language will feel genuinely different from every other expedition line here.

What the ships are actually like

Boutique expedition ships, small and design-led, with an understated European aesthetic rather than the practical, expedition-first feel of Lindblad or Quark. Commandant Charcot, the icebreaker flagship, is the most capable ship in the fleet.

French is not a flourish here. It is the texture of the week

This is the detail worth understanding before you book rather than on the first morning. Announcements and briefings run in French first and English second, which makes them noticeably longer than on a single-language ship. The majority of the people around you at dinner will be French. The kitchens are trained under Alain Ducasse's own consultancy, fleet-wide, and Veuve Clicquot has been the house champagne since July 2024.

If that reads as appealing, you have found something genuinely rare: European refinement on an expedition ship, without the Anglo-American register every other line here defaults to. Being in the linguistic minority for a fortnight is a small price for it.

If you were picturing everything happening in English by default, this is the wrong ship, and finding that out on day one in a briefing you are only half following is a poor way to learn it.
