Marella Cruises

All-inclusive, British in feel, and you will be flying to reach it.

Who Marella Cruises genuinely suits

  • Anyone who wants the bill settled before they board without paying luxury prices for the privilege. An all-inclusive drinks package comes with every booking as standard, running 10am to 2am, which at this price point is genuinely unusual.

  • People who liked the idea of a package holiday and wanted it to move. The crowd is overwhelmingly British, the tone is relaxed, and nobody is going to make you dress for dinner.

When you'd be better off elsewhere

  • Anyone who does not want to fly. This is the whole catch and it is worth being blunt about it.

  • Anyone who reads all-inclusive as nothing left to pay. Premium branded spirits, speciality coffees, bottled wine and Champagne all sit outside the standard package, and so, unexpectedly, do canned soft drinks. None of that makes the fare bad value. It does mean the bill is not quite closed.

  • Anyone looking for a quiet, understated ship. The programming is loud on purpose, and that is a feature rather than an accident.

What the ships are actually like

Mid-sized and unfussy: Marella Explorer, Marella Discovery and Marella Discovery 2 carry the bulk of the programme. These are not new-build showpieces and they are not sold as such.

The itineraries cluster tightly around warm water. Of 498 sailings, 234 are Mediterranean, 140 Atlantic Islands and 123 Caribbean, which is close to the entire operation and tells you exactly what the line is for.

A remarkable number of these sailings have a soundtrack

Look down a list of Marella departures and something jumps out that no other line on this site does. The sailings have names like Electric Sunsets 80's vs 90's, Country Rhythms, Canarian Flavours and Atlantic Treasures. A meaningful share of the programme is themed, and the theme is frequently music.

This is not a gimmick bolted onto a normal cruise. If you board a three-night Palma round trip called Electric Sunsets, the eighties and nineties are the holiday, and the other guests chose it for that reason. Which is either exactly what you wanted or precisely what you were trying to avoid, and there is very little middle ground once the ship has left.

So read the sailing name before you read the itinerary. On most lines it is marketing furniture. Here it is a straight description of the week you have booked, and it is the single most useful thing on the page.
