Which lines are actually built for families
There are three different answers hiding behind the word family: lines built for children, lines that tolerate them, and lines that will not carry them at all. Booking the second by mistake is the expensive one.
What the category actually covers
The lines below are the ones our own search will put in front of a family with children. They are not all mass market: the list runs from the big resort ships with water parks up to ultra-luxury lines that run genuine youth programmes.
Two other groups are deliberately absent. Some lines will not carry children at all, which is a condition of travel rather than a matter of taste. Others carry them but have nothing for them, and in practice you would find almost no other children aboard outside the school holidays.
A third group takes older children but has no provision for under-12s. Those are excluded here too, because a family page that lists a line your eight-year-old cannot use is worse than no page.
Who this genuinely suits
Families whose children span more than one age band. The lines below run a full ladder from toddler to teen rather than one room that fits nobody well.
Anyone who has been put off by a previous cruise where the kids' club looked good in the brochure and turned out to be a couple of hours a day. What is advertised and what actually runs are not always the same thing, and the note below is about exactly that gap.
Families who want the childcare to genuinely free up adult time, not just occupy children in the same room as the adults.

The toddler age gate is not what actually separates these lines
It is tempting to compare family lines on the minimum age for their nursery or kids' club, as though a lower number means a more family-friendly ship. In practice that number is unusually consistent across mass-market lines: most take children from around six months in some form (a supervised nursery), with the main kids' club starting around three. Comparing lines on that figure alone will not tell you much, because they mostly agree on it.
What genuinely differs, and what the brochure is far less specific about, is whether the programme runs as a full daily schedule year-round or scales up mainly for school holidays and peak weeks. A club that looks identical on paper, same age bands, same advertised opening hours, can run a noticeably thinner programme on an ordinary October sailing than it does at February half term.
If a particular week matters to you, ask directly whether the kids' club runs its full programme on that specific sailing, rather than assuming the brochure's opening hours apply every week of the year.
When you'd be better off elsewhere
If the children are grown and you are travelling as adults, ignore this page: it excludes several of the best lines on the site purely because they are not geared to children.
If you need specific accessibility or dietary provision, say so in the search rather than picking from this list. That reaches a human alongside your results, and it changes the answer more than the line does.
